Lore Unexpurgated In the time of the seventh rotational cycle of the galaxy, Vescentia was born. Four fragments floated through space, lost until they were awakened and drawn to each other. These four fragments were chaos, order, life and sense. Through their cosmic energies, a world was born. The life fragment reacted first, creating a flat expanse of land within the darkness of space. Then, animals were of all kind appeared, yet they were lifeless and senseless, having no will of their own. Then, the fragment of sense kindled, giving the creatures intellect and will, blessing them with speech and craftiness. They began to wander the world. Moments after, the order fragment came alive. It brought peace and reign to the nations, and they lived in harmony for days, before the final fragment awoke. It was a dark power and brought chaos to the lands. It turned predator on prey, herbivores into carnivores, created lava flows, caused earthquakes, killed children, and overall, corrupted Vescentia before its time.
Yet, the new world was not left without a solution to this problem. Just as there were four fragments, four guardians rose above the rest of the animals, able and ready. None had parents, instead each was crafted out of an element of the land in which they were born. Dhriti, a snow leopard, was created of ice, Ajax of vines, Elira of sand and Vivek out of water. Awoken out of magic, all were found in their prime ages, young and lively. Elira was the youngest, and Vivek, the oldest. They quickly discovered what the chaos fragment had done to their beautiful lands, and reacted quickly to stop the plague that had been born of magic.
Iriku was a disease of slow and painful death. Its name means “eerie death,” for victims would die in the most bone-chilling fashion. A victim would receive the plague through drinking water, as it was a water transmitted bacteria. However, being born in a sense of magic through one of the most powerful objects in the universe, it would only affect five individuals at a time, making it painstakingly slow, yet effective. Not many yet lived in Vescentia, and victims would die within the first four days of receiving the disease. The bacteria would eat inside the stomach and get into the bloodstream. It would travel to the heart, and there it would slow the beating to a drugged state. Next, it would travel to the brain where it cuts all nerves that control the body, paralysing the victim. Then, it plays with the victim like a puppet master with its toys, until finally, the eyes roll back into the head and blood pours out of the sockets and mouth. The victim gives a scream so high in frequency that most are not able to hear it, but those who can are forever haunted by its echoes. Victims die mid-scream.
This disease struck terror into the bravest hearts of Vescentia, driving them to the edge of sanity looking for ways to protect themselves. They sought out guardians that could protect them from the darkness of the disease, keeping them safe. And so the magic of the land chose four animals, pure in heart and righteous in spirit, to step forth and guard the lands. The first chosen was Dhriti, a snow leopard well known for her unparalleled beauty, courage and patience. Born in Ethona, she was chosen to be its guardian, as well, and gave the cold-dwellers hope and bravery in their greatest time of need. Then Ajax was chosen, a valley wolf known for his skill in battle; he was a warrior forged of the highest might and greatest strength. He gave Viravea something to fight for. Next, Vivek was selected for this special task. The forest elephant quickly became known for his knowledge and intellect. All knew he would be the wisest of the guardians, and a true fit for Casabir. Finally, Elira was chosen for Agova. A passionate and free-spirited Akhal-Teke, she was perfect for the wide-open desert lands the South had to offer. Her protection would mean peace over the arid lands, and all found her compassion a trait to desire. She was hand-crafted for the people who enjoyed the freedom the desert gave them. However, the protection these guardians provided was short lived. The Eerie Death was too powerful and easily overcame the magic that these guardians held. Separated, they stood no chance against such a foe and would be eradicated within weeks. A decision quickly came to be; the four came together for the sake of their world. They devised a plan to wipe this disease and make sure it never returned, a plan to rid the earth of all the water it held. However, this scheme was swiftly cut down as drought would overrun the lands and kill creatures that had not yet come in contact with the disease. However, as they sat and did nothing, the disease multiplied, affecting hundreds at a time. As a last resort, the guardians gathered together once more.
In this desperate time, they combined their abilities together, using each of their special skill sets to do something unheard of. They rose above their world, and together, destroyed it. With lava raining down from the heavens and earthquakes rattling the core of the world, the land was burnt from within, burning themselves up in the process. However, there was an antidote to the chaos they reigned upon the earth. As their ashes glittered down to the dead rock below, life sprung from the surface. Bits of Vescentia that had broken off into space returned, and the land was renewed. No longer did it have a year, a time, a problem. For now, and for a long time to come, there was a loving peace. Until chaos returned, and a new darkness was born.
